An exclusive interview with David Peacock, currently President, Asia Pacific who recently transitioned from, Managing Director (General Manager), MSD in the UK and Ireland. David shares in this interview with his chief of staff (Jennifer) his journey on becoming a managing director since he graduated with his first degree. Over the course of his career, David has gained a broad set of leadership experiences, including: serving as the chief of staff for the office of the chairman, president and CEO of Merck & Co; serving as chief financial officer for MSD in Japan; leading the company’s business in Hong Kong & Macau; and successfully delivering in a variety of other commercial roles based in Japan, Vietnam, Singapore and the United States. Following business school, David spent time in Australia working for Bain & Co., a global strategic management consultancy. During this time, he also co-founded NUUN & Co., which develops and markets tablet-based electrolyte products. David received his undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, completed course work at the London School of Economics and has an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University in Illinois. Robert John (Rob) Executive Director Strategic Planning, Chief of Staff Europe and Canada (EUCAN), MSD Human Health Rob began his CoS role in early 2021 having previously been responsible for Commercial Operations of our Oncology business across EMEAC. Focused on pan regional activities, processes and initiatives Rob works across the leadership team and markets to help ensure we can meet our goals for patients & MSD. His two previous positions in Oncology, initially for Mid-Europe (MER) and then EMEAC, centred on aligning and planning the activities needed to successfully launch KEYTRUDA in successive tumours including Go To Market planning, May/Nov FC submissions and overall leadership team governance. Before joining the region Rob worked in various roles within the MSD UK organisation including Marketing Operation & Channel strategy driving investments and capability building for our channel mix and digital customer engagement. Rob joined the industry in 2004 at AstraZeneca having graduated from the University of Bath in the UK with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology. Rob lives in Manchester UK with his wife Nicola, and young children Sophie & Alexander, outside of work Sophie & Alexander certainly keep him busy but when time permits he enjoys running and developing his amateur cooking ability! Rob believes in the vastness of learning - there is no clear career path, he explored instead of putting the pressure on himself to follow a straight path. Jo is a senior corporate communications professional who has worked domestically and at an international level. She is expert in devising and delivering integrated internal and external strategic communications and public affairs campaigns to support commercial objectives within complex organisations and across geographies. She is equipped with the ability to deploy the most appropriate communications channel according to the stakeholder. She is a strategic thinker with strong business, leadership, inter-personal and team management skills, used to operating at board level and advising CEOs. Jo currently leads MSD UK’s Human Health integrated communications and policy business unit, setting its policy and internal/external communications strategy and priorities, in line with the UK business strategy. She leads a team of over 20 professionals, working across MSD’s UK footprint, managing internal communications, social and digital media, government relations and stakeholder engagement. In this role she is responsible for ensuring that the political, policy and customer environment is enabling access to MSD’s medicines and vaccines, as well as managing our reputation. In partnership with Leadership Team colleagues, she also focus on the communication of our business transformation and employee engagement. Joe is a Senior Lecturer in Biology/Animal Science in the Life Sciences Section at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU). He carried out his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at CCCU before obtaining a postdoctoral research position at the Swedish University of Agricultural Science (SLU), where he conducted research into applied insect chemical ecology, before returning to a full time position at CCCU in 2012. Joe teaches across the science programs from Foundation Level through to MSc and PhD. Joe's primary interest is insect ecology, and how science can be used to solve problems in agriculture and biodiversity conservation. His PhD examined the interactions between male-killing endosymbiotic bacteria and biological control agents, which included research into aspects of insect chemical ecology, molecular biology, genetics and pure ecology. Recently he has been working towards the world’s first implementation of insect pheromones to monitor rare and endangered insects.
